HeyGen and Synthesia both gate output behind a monthly minutes allowance that resets on a subscription cycle — go over it, or let a month lapse unused, and you are either upgrading tiers or paying for capacity you did not use.

FreeLLM's AI Actor and Lip Sync tools are 20 credits per second, deducted only from a balance you already hold, with no monthly reset and no tier to outgrow. A one-off video costs the same whether it is your first job or your fiftieth.

What that costs for a single video

A 60-second script comes out to roughly 1,200 credits on FreeLLM — about $18–24 depending on the pack, one time, no subscription required to get there. If you only need one video this month, that is the whole bill.

If you are producing avatar video daily — training content, product updates, a recurring show — a subscription's per-minute rate likely beats ours at volume. That is the same trade-off as any subscription-versus-metered comparison: frequent, predictable usage favours the plan; occasional or bursty usage favours paying only for what you use.

Two starting points, not one

HeyGen and Synthesia both lead with talking-avatar templates and a library of stock presenters — useful if you do not want to appear yourself. FreeLLM's AI Actor starts from a photo you provide; there is no stock-avatar library to browse.

The two tools also split on what you are allowed to start from. AI Actor takes a script and synthesises the voice. Lip Sync takes audio you already recorded and matches the mouth to it — useful for a dub, a redub, or fixing one line without regenerating the whole take.

No scene templates, no brand kit, no team workspace, no built-in translation pipeline. Both HeyGen and Synthesia are built for teams producing training and marketing video at scale, with the collaboration tooling that implies. FreeLLM is a narrower set of generation tools behind one API and one credit balance — closer to infrastructure than to a production studio.

How to decide

Estimate the minutes of avatar video you actually produced last month, not the minutes you imagined producing. If a subscription tier already covers that with room to spare, the subscription is probably cheaper per minute. If you produce avatar video occasionally — a handful of videos, not a pipeline — paying per second means you are never carrying unused capacity.

Both categories of tool are routing to similar underlying model quality; the honest differentiator is the billing shape, not who has the 'better' avatar.
